I tried not to watch television on Saturday, but that didn’t work out. I was successful with not watching TV all day on Sunday. I think it helped that I had things to do and wasn’t all home day. It was hard to do it on Saturday because there wasn’t much else I had to do. I learned that my day seemed more productive because I wasn’t sitting around watching TV all the time.

I am going to try not watch TV for the entire weekend. Stepping out into the woods means for me to try and improve myself. Making a positive change in my life. Doing this would help understand what this really means.

In the article Greg smith presents some common values as The Great Gatsby. First Greg wants to leave his job because the company stopped having integrity, being honest, working together, and being motivated. The employees didn’t care one bit about the customers. The company really started to downfall and become very different than it was 12 years ago when he started working there. In the Great Gatsby the same thing sort of happens. Tom starts cheating on his wife Daisy and lies to her saying he has always loved her. Tom starts to not even bother to think about Daisy’s feelings. It’s all about he wants instead of making his wife happy. Another value that is emphasized is money. In the article Greg says “These days the most common question I get from junior analysts about derivatives is, “How much money did we make off the client?” The workers just care about how much they’re getting paid. In the book it starts to become a competition between West Egg and East Egg of who has the most money. One wants to seem more desirable than the other. Gatsby even falls into this trap when he starts to hang out with people who have different social classes. He wants to become more like the people he hangs out with. Both of these are trying to convey that people aren’t caring about others and will risk anything to get what they want. They’re very selfish and don’t understand it matters how other people feel as well. In the end Greg Smith is realizing all of this stuff and wants to move on to a better work environment. Some of the characters in The Great Gatsby get punished for all of this behavior; meanwhile others get let off the hook.

I think Fitzgerald does believe that you can change the past because he created this character in the first place. When he created Gatsby it could have related somewhat to him and how he thinks the past could be recreated. When he starts to tell us about James Gatz, the character he had in his head was easy to create because it related back to him. For example in chapter 6 Fitzgerald says “I suppose he’d had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people.” I think he wanted to tell people that just because someone like Gatsby has had a bad past doesn’t mean you can’t change how you feel about it. His attitude is presented through this character that you want to be positive. Even when he’s talking about Gatsby’s heart being in a bad place and having a never ending imagination it shows that you want to change the past. If you can’t make something go away then it might be better to change what you’ve done before. Also if you’ve made a mistake it could be possible to change it, just like Gatsby is with Daisy and Tom. He’s trying to reconnect with them and show the real side of him.

Part of the American Dream is to achieve self fulfillment, having money, and overall being happy. In The Great Gatsby this is shown through Nick when he starts to talk about the differences between East and West egg. He lives in West egg where it’s New Money, less fashionable, and sort of show offs. Nick and Gatsby seem to want to live in East Egg rather than West egg. Nick says “I lived at West Egg, the well, the less fashionable of the two, though this a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not so little contrast between them.” His dream is to be more established and the American Dream shows that people want to have that wealth and status. He might feel as though his dreams can’t become accomplished without having money.  It’s really hard to get anywhere without these two key elements. Even Gatsby has a goal which is to reunite with Daisy again. He’s basically nothing without her. So this goal represents the American Dream because people wanted to do something or achieve something greater in life. Another part of the American Dream is freedom which is reinforced by Patrick Henry. In the speech it says “I ask gentlemen, sir, what means this martial array, if its purpose be not to force us to submission? And what do we have to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Give me liberty or give me death!” Patrick Henry is saying that we can’t just sit here anymore and do nothing. They have been doing that for a long time and nothing has happened. In order to get freedom and attain the American Dream it’s important to fight. Being able to do whatever you want when you want won’t come with being lazy. People should fight for what they believe in. People should understand in order to be happy you need to fix what’s wrong.
